Today I am here to talk to you about a very important topic. Alot of the international nurses when they come into UK must watch this and understand common errors nurses do in their OSCE preparation. Now preparing for OSCE has to be very very important for you to pass the OSCE first attempt. Now there are several errors nurses do which can be completely avoidable. What are these errors?
What are the common most errors international nurses do when they start preparing for the OSCE?
Number one common error is not realizing the intensity of the OSCE. I get nurses with the understanding that I have 10 years of nursing experience, I have got 20 years of nursing experience, I have come from this country that country,
I have worked in one of the best hospital in my country that is one of the first error where nurses are getting wrong understanding the intensity of the OSCE and thinking okay my experience will take care of this UK OSCE I can do it. But can I please tell you we are getting lot of nurses from various countries and some of them excellent in nursing education they may be holding gold medal in their nursing education however when it comes to OSCE performance we see they go all over.
When we put that time clock 12 minute or 8 minute doing all the points that is required within that given time that’s where the challenge comes. So what I suggest is please know this OSCE is a practical exam and you have to keep things simple and you do need to do everything what is being asked for that particular skill you cannot miss anything even if you miss you can verbalize but without practice that is impossible.
My advice is whether you have 10 years of experience whether you have 20 years of experience whether you have no experience this OSCE is at newly qualified nurse level and you must need to practice to the standard of OSCE marking criteria.
Second common error people do is not doing the right preparation for the OSCE. What do I mean by right preparation for the OSCE? People preparing OSCE through YouTube videos or doing a virtual zoom session and thinking that just by that preparation I will pass the OSCE.
Now check guys how many people do you think have passed the OSCE just by doing those two things watching the YouTube video and doing the virtual training of pass the OSCE. If I rightly know less than 1 % of people might have passed the OSCE by doing that. Why is it happening that? This is mainly because this is a practical test this is not a theory this is not a CBT you have to do hands -on practice.
Common challenge we have here is when we put that timer on can you do that skill in 12 minutes or 8 minutes. This is where anxiety kicks in. My best advice is guys get some hands -on practice with the equipment and have a trainer to give you feedback face to face live. When you are performing when you aredoing mistakes when you aregetting the feedback from the trainer that is where you correct and do it right and it will help you definitely to pass the OSCE first attempt.
Not sitting at home and watching the YouTube video and virtual session will help you. My best advice is do get some hands -on training do not miss it. Now next common error people do is not understanding after the training what to be done. Now after the training you must need to fine -tune what you have learnt.
Please do not book the test two to three days after the training. It will be very very difficult for you to pass the test within two to three days after the training. There is a lot of information for you to learn and fine -tune. My best advice is to consolidate what you have learnt and to fine -tune you must need to give at least 20 to 30 days after the training where you can practice well.
When you are practicing well that is where you improve your confidence, your body language will be positive and you will perform really well when you enter into the exam room when you face the examiner. You may be doing few errors but you will be alert to verbalize those errors and pass that station first attempt. Another common error international nurses do is the choosing the right company for their training.
Who is delivering the training for you? What is their reputation? What sort of reviews they have? Have you checked their feedback? Are they registered? Or individual person calling you, I am delivering the training for 100 pound 200 pound. I know you want to keep the cost down. Please do check and you might be very novice into this country not understanding the laws and legalities and you might be falling into trouble.
So please do check their reputation. Are they registered? Can they deliver the training? Do they have a knowledge skills and the experience within the nursing industry and do they really know what they talk about? Now next thing is important to look at as a company reviews.
If you check it Trustpilot is well known in terms of reviews and the genuine reviews which nurses or the clients or the candidates can give it to the company. You do need to look at the word of mouth what do people say about the company and their training. Other thing last thing is very important what sort of support you get. Do you get a very good support from trainers? Are they supporting you until you pass the OSCE? This is critical.
